The Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) empowers deaf and hard of hearing students to reach their full potential in a nurturing and supportive environment. We actively engage students through individualized education, embrace diverse communication, and foster holistic development in partnership with families and the community. As a statewide resource from birth to age 21, ISD utilizes advanced technology to ensure every student achieves personal excellence.
Our Purpose and Principles
The Mission of the Illinois School for the Deaf is to engage students in a supportive, safe and nurturing environment to achieve personal excellence academically, socially, physically and emotionally.
The Illinois School for the Deaf will provide an environment in which students will thrive and succeed to their optimal potential.
• We believe in providing a safe, healthy, and respectful learning, living and work environment.
• We believe Individual Education Plans guide educational programming.
• We believe all forms of communication and technology for deaf and hard of hearing students should be welcomed and respected.
• We believe in providing students a supportive and caring environment to develop the whole child socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically.
• We believe in being a state-wide resource for deaf (ages 0-21) education.
• We believe in sharing the responsibility of educating our students among parents, students, school and local workforce community.
• We believe in utilizing, maintaining and updating cutting edge technology that meets current business standards.
Illinois school for the deaf is an accessible ASL/English bilingual environment in which individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing learn and work together to ensure effective communication. All communication at ISD is accessible, inclusive, and respectful. Any and all means of communication are welcome at ISD.
In assuring access to information, it is appropriate that accommodations be made for the reception of auditory information to meet individual needs. This includes supporting the use of amplification devices, such as cochlear implants and providing encouragement for listening and learning through audition as appropriate.
