Job Description
The Special Education Paraprofessional supports students with disabilities under the direction of certified teachers and related service staff. The paraprofessional assists in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs), promotes student independence, and helps maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-Provide direct support to students with disabilities in academic, behavioral, and social settings.
-Implement instructional activities as outlined by the special education teacher or classroom teacher.
-Assist in collecting data for IEP goals, behavior plans, and progress monitoring.
-Support students in general education settings to promote inclusion and participation.
-Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-classroom activities.
-Implement behavior intervention plans and use de-escalation strategies when needed.
-Provide physical assistance to students as required (lifting, positioning, feeding, toileting, etc.) in a respectful and safe manner.
-Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and school matters.
-Communicate effectively with teachers, therapists, and administrators regarding student progress and needs.
Assist with classroom organization, materials preparation, and maintaining a clean, structured learning environment.
-Participate in professional development and training sessions as required.
Qualifications
-High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree or 60 college credits preferred).
-Meets state and district paraprofessional certification requirements.
-Experience working with children, especially those with disabilities, preferred.
-Ability to follow directions, work collaboratively, and maintain patience and empathy.
-Knowledge of basic academic support strategies, behavior management, and communication techniques.
Work Environment
-Work is performed in classrooms, playgrounds, lunchrooms, and other school settings.
-May require standing, walking, lifting up to 50 lbs., and assisting with personal care tasks.
-Frequent interaction with students who may have physical, behavioral, or communication challenges.

-Maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.
-Demonstrate flexibility, reliability, and a positive attitude.
-Support the teacher’s instructional goals and uphold the school’s mission and policies.
-Use appropriate language and behavior with all students
